Finding a lost crayon....

Paige dropped a crayon that rolled under the oven. She immediately went to the laundry room for a variety of tools to try to fish it out.

The morning Advent Calendar chocolate makes her crazy...

Making a Gingerbread train...

Paige loves trains so this was a fun family craft. BTW, the bandaid on her chin is due to her jumping off her stool into my nail and scraping her face.

It's about time we put her to work!

Hey--what else are we going to do when Mike is at work? I'm pregnant! This little shovel should suffice for any 2 meter tall snow drifts like we had last year.

I need full on Eskimo gear for this weather. Even Paige, who never wears mitts, exclaimed, "I'm freezing! I need my mitts!!"

2nd round of shots...

Paige and I went to the clinic yesterday to get our shots. She needed the 2nd H1N1 half dose, and I decided to get the seasonal flu shot while we were there. After her non-nap ended with her jumping out of bed and scaring herself (this was a first, I'm hoping she learned her lesson), I looked at the wait times online and after seeing there was no wait, I told her "we are going to get another flu shot and get a chicken little bandaid". She was happy to comply since last time she was very happy with her Chicken Little bandaid.

We walked right in and got signed up. She didn't make a peep during the shot and watched the needle going in her arm. I didn't feel I should place adult fears on her by telling her not to look at it. I figured she a)doesn't realize that it is really going IN her arm, and b)she shouldn't be scared if I'm not scared. After getting it she let out a quiet moan and was very quiet for the next little while. I think it hurt a little bit this time. We had to wait in the observation room after our shots, where they were playing the movie "Kung Fu Panda". We watched this for 15 minutes and then left.

The goal was to go rent a movie after this, so we headed off to Rogers. On the way Paige fell asleep but I was able to successfully transfer her into her stroller still sleeping. This is only the 2nd time that this has happened. I took the opportunity to stroll around the video store for quite a long time.

This morning we went to the mall for some Christmas shopping. Paige must have had a bit of a reaction to the shot this time as she said "I'm sick" a lot of times while we were shopping. She was very docile and lethargic the entire time, which made it very easy for me to shop! She wasn't demanding to get out of her stroller, or asking for continual snacks which was nice for a change. When we went home she asked to go to sleep and as I was changing her clothes I noticed she had both a slight fever and a red patch around her injection site. For the record, she did not sleep and I tried very hard to make it happen. Ah well. She seems fine now.

10,000 hits!

Just now as I double checked my previous published blog post I noticed that brought the counter up to 10,001 hits! Wow!

A little white lie....

For 2 nights now I have been able to tell Paige a little white lie in order to get her to go back to sleep in the night. The first night I was not aware of this trick until well into my time with her in the room (I had been reading books, laying down, etc. for almost an hour before I discovered the trick), but last night I used the trick right away. I rubbed her back for a bit (she woke up because she had hurt her finger), and then I went to leave. "No, don't go!" she says. I said, "I'm just going to the bathroom I'll be back in a bit". I knew she was tired enough that without me distracting her in the room she would fall asleep right away! haha. The trick is to leave the door open as you walk away, with the illusion of coming back. Not a lie really, I had to go to the bathroom and I would be back in the morning! I just went and got back in bed after the bathroom. I think it will only work if she looks like she could fall back to sleep right away. And it probably does work because during the day I constantly go to the bathroom and come right back!

Update: Wah ha ha! Night 3: Paige woke up after mike's phone rang loudly. She needed to go to the bathroom and when we got back in her room I lay down for 1 minute, then used the bathroom trick again successfully!

Successful Santa visit!

This year went infinitely better than last year. Even though we stood in line for a good hour (Mike took her around a bit to a store, and then to watch Santa and the kids while I held he spot), she was very well behaved and excited to see Santa. When it was our turn he said hello and asked if she would like to sit on his lap. She nodded and smiled. When she got up there she kept looking at him shyly with big smiles. He asked if she had been a good girl and she nodded. Besides a lot of nodding and smiling she wouldn't speak, but that's ok. They offer the Santa visit for free now, so you are allowed to take your own pictures. Our only regret was not bringing our own camera, since this photo is a bit low quality (they send it over email from a web cam), and we weren't able to capture any of her smiling moments. I may bring her back one afternoon before Christmas if we are looking for something to do.

We had a nice morning overall as we went to Cora's for breakfast first, and then took Paige on a few of the mall rides after the Santa visit.

A bad mood cure!

Paige was in a baaaaad mood this morning when I tried to get her to go to gymnastics. I ended up forcing her to go since we missed last week (due to the same Thursday night random sleep issue). I was determined to get there at all costs...I mean, hey, this thing cost $200 and it will be over soon and we will have nothing to do!

So anyway, she was fine-ish at the class, just acting a bit odd, but freaked out as we left. I started in with the bribes of chocolate milk and the purchase of a "treat" at the grocery store if she was a good girl...I had to as we had no food at home. Anyway, she was fine when we got to the store, but what reinforced the good behaviour, I believe ,was a sudden blackout in the store. What fun! We had to shop for things in the dark. She thought this was great! Some of the lights were on when we were leaving, but it snapped her out of the bad mood and she has been great ever since! Well...I haven't tried to have lunch with her yet, as she is quite wrapped up in another independent game of "train tracks" with her books and trains.

Baby girl...
