Summer toys?

I felt very against getting a huge plastic toy (mainly for environmental reasons) for the backyard until I saw this sandbox/pool and table combo on the toys r us website. My original plan was to check kijiji for something used. I haven't seen anything yet that was what I was looking for, and what I did see was really visibly worn. Soooo....maybe we'll get something new knowing we will give it away in the future!! Anyway, this one from Toys r us seems perfect since our backyard is pure sun all day long (and we have lots of space with nothing but grass in our backyard). I would love to be able to have snacks outside with Paige, and let her play in the pool under the umbrella. I thought at first that maybe the sandbox was a good idea, but hot sand in 35 degree weather doesn't sound as appealing as refreshing pool!!

We have this in our backyard. Different colours but the same unit. The first summer we used it as a pool. Last summer, I filled it with sand and I bought a $10 inflatable pool as well. I love the umbrella, because we have no shade in our yard. The sand doesn't get too hot because it has to stay damp to make castles etc. (Rona has the best sand BTW.) Sand is always messy--Leyla scoops it onto the picnic table, carries around the yard, it's in all the clothes and shoes all the time. We haven't used our picnic table much because it's hard to eat outside in the summer with the bees and there was always so much sand on our table. I do like it as a sand box because we are using it already this year. We are getting more use out of it than we would as just a pool.

I'm waiting for the big, big Step 2 slide to go on sale. The Easter Bunny is going to bring it, I think.

How about planting a couple of fast growing trees in the back yard, "for the environment's sake". Also, I bet Mike could get a "sandbox kit" or pattern from Rona and build a wooden sandbox. I agree with Cara, it is good to have a pool and a sandbox. Our kids and grandkids always had a sandbox to play in...if you have access to your backyard, when Paige is a little older, she can play outside without you having to be with her every moment. NOT in a pool of course, but certainly a sandbox. You just want to make sure it is a covered one, so that the cats can't get into it when it isn't being used. Love Gramama
