Henry Michael Turcsanyi is born!

On May 4 at 4:24 am Henry entered the world!

The second he was born he started to cry and everything about him was perfect.  He weighed 7lbs 13 oz and was 20 inches.  He was born with dark brown hair, and we still can't tell if his eyes are blue or brown.  My mother's intuition was mainly correct--if you recall the last blog post I thought that he would be born the next day--he wasn't born that day, but I did go into labour that day!

In the afternoon/early evening of may 3, I felt like I was having mild contractions, but it had happened the day before as well, which had turned out to be nothing.  I decided to believe it was nothing and carried on with my day.  It was actually a really great day...took the girls to the park by our new house (I'll post some pictures in another post as they are cute), and went out for Vietnamese food.  Looking back it was a great way to spend our last day as a family of 4.  Anyway, I was tired and went to bed around 9:30.  As I was lying down I felt really uncomfortable and eventually got up and went into the baby room and sat in the chair hoping to discern some sort of pattern from the contractions.  They actually seemed to be 25-30 mins apart.  I tried to rest and contacted our doula Michelle who told me to drink water and try to sleep.  I had woken Mike up to inform him but told him to go back to sleep as well.  It wasn't too comfortable to lie in bed so I waited in the family room for a while until Mike came out, and we decided we'd better inform Auntie Amanda, who would have to come and stay with the girls over night.  She arrived at 12:30ish I think.  When she got to the house the contractions were maybe 5 minutes apart and getting very annoying but not  horrendous.  We all hung out in the living room as they got worse.  The baby was starting to move around a lot with every contraction and I kept feeling the urge to pee all the time even though i didn't really have to.  Around 2:00 I had a super bad contraction and decided we needed assistance, so Michelle came over right away.  At this point I was saying things like "this isn't fun", and trying various positions to get comfortable and deal with the pain, but really was just flailing all over the place, unable to do anything of any use.  The difference when Michelle arrived was amazing.  She got me to calm down with each contraction, breath, and relax my whole body.  Way easier to deal with the pain when relaxed as opposed to tense and freaking out.  She wanted me to try new positions and suggested I get in the bath to relax but I felt like things were progressing rapidly.  She told me to tell her when it was time to go to the hospital and around 3:00am I decided it was time.  She told me to focus on a spot in the car with each contraction and breath through it.  It was definitely a way worse drive than the other 2 labours, as I was much further along.  Mike did a great job of driving carefully!

When we arrived at the hospital the 3 of us made our way in which was really really difficult.  I was so reluctant to get out of the car as I knew that I would probably have lots of contractions just walking into the hospital.  When the nurses met us in the hall I remember saying "I am very much in labour", at which point another contraction came on.  I'm so glad that I looked like I was far along as they didn't even take me into the triage room to be checked out, and just admitted me right to the room.  I believe we got to the hospital at 3:20.  Mike had to go off to give them my health card, and in the meantime they checked me out--8-9cm she said! I was so sure they'd say 4-5 cm (that was what i thought in my head), that I had a good cry.  Could not believe I'd made it so far without medication and that the end was so close! It's funny because leading up to the day I was so unsure as to whether I'd be able to get through the labour without the epidural, since I'd had it both times before and knew what a relatively pain free child birth was like.  They asked me after they examined me if I wanted anything for the pain and when I said no I'd never been so sure of anything before.  I knew I could do it...I figured that to get me into the world my mom, and her mom, and her mom forever and ever had never had an epidural.  I felt like it was a rite of passage for me in a way.  I'm not saying there is anything wrong with epidurals or c-sections, or any of these other things that happen in labour, but as it was our third and last child I made it my mission to have this experience.  I'm not going to lie, the whole thing was the worst pain I have ever endured. It only got worse and worse and worse and when it was time for that final push, they told me to wait as the doctor was putting on his gloves.  I needed that baby out right away and I was sure there was not enough time to get the gloves on.  It's amazing how when you can actually feel that the baby is right there ready to come out how much harder you can push.  I now know why Rose was vacuumed out, as I wasn't pushing nearly hard enough.  There was a definite desperation with this one.  As much as I could feel all of the pain I was surprised when he actually was born.  I didn't even know that it was happening, and was shocked that I actually did it.

So the whole labour--the painful part which i think of as the labour, was about 4 hours long...and the really painful part was only around 2.5 hours long.  Pretty good if you ask me.

After he was born, they let him lie on me right away for a really long time.  He had a couple of poos on my stomach which was fun.  After a while of lying there he started the rooting reflex so it was time to try to feed him.  He took to nursing fairly easily which was a relief.  Michelle gave me some water and a snack from her bag, and made sure we were all doing well and then went home.  I'm so so grateful to have had her there as she made all the difference in the world.

After that I had a quick breakfast snack and we went to our room. The plan was to stay the night (as the OBGYN said I should stay till the following morning, but I felt well enough to attempt to go home later that day.  There is just no sleeping when you're sharing a room with someone and their snoring husband.  Even though we'd have the kids at home and that would make things challenging with me being a little slow, it ensured I'd get some sort of sleep. So as the time was 6:00am ish when we got to our room and there was no hope of sleep, mike eventually went to the car to try to get a quick 1/2 hour nap while I fed Henry. Then we tried to switch off after that so I could have a rest. No sleep was had but lying down and closing my eyes felt pretty good. We had no choice really but to be awake. There were people in and out of the room all morning and lots of noise. Henry was fairly quiet sleeping in our arms. We had a few visitors--grandma and grandpa came first. Easy to get there as grandma was already in the hospital. My dad just wheeled her on in. Later when Amanda and James came with the girls at the same time as grandma and grandpa returned from being away I said "oh look everyone's rolling in". "Literally" mike says.  But the best line of the day came from James who commented on Henry's May 4th birthday--"May the fourth be with you Henry", he said.

The girls were happy to be having fun with auntie Amanda and uncle James. They were interested to see us and their new brother but were also excited about the trip that was planned to Yogurty's afterwards. Obviously it would take time for it all to sink in. Rose was even a bit scared of Henry. I think because he was so small. Closer to when we were going to leave we also had a visit from Uncle Greg.

At some point around lunch, the nurse said we could be discharged in the afternoon after being seen by an OB and pediatrician. It only meant we'd have to return for Henry's 24hour tests the next day. Still better to go home I figured. Before we left, Henry was given a bath by tue same nurse that bathed the girls. Weird. No one had to check my blood pressure constantly or change IV's since i didnt have an epidural. The OB on call ok'd me to go and the pediatrician ok'd Henry to go. I believe it was around 4:00 when we busted out of there.  It was a good feeling walking out of there. Although I was ridiculously stiff, I remembered our 3:20am entrance which was not fun. Henry was driven home in Daddy's Audi and greeted by all the neighbors who were enjoying the nice day outside. Really the rest of that day is a blur. The girls were home and got to check out their little brother. We ate dinner of some sort and called it a night...or whatever you can call it with a 1.5 day old!

Last day as a family of 4...

Here are the pics from the park near the new house that I was talking about. Will love to have a park close by that actually offers the shade of some big old trees.

This is the tree blocking the path to get to the park. I will literally have to take Henry's car seat out of the stroller, walk it through, put it down, go back and collapse the stroller and carry it past the tree.

Awaiting a baby...

Last blog post before we welcome a new baby boy into our family.  We have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of this baby for weeks now.  Everyone thought I'd go early, and now I sit here 4 days late.  My gut feeling tells me it's tomorrow. Too many weird feelings going on in there for days now.  Rose was 6 days late, and since this is a third baby I'll assume he can come at least a day earlier than that.  Paige was induced, so not sure when she would have come.

Unfortunately Maura's asthma got very bad and she is in the hospital.  Maybe for a few days.  Seems like everything is happening at once.  I feel so bad and wish this baby could stay in until she was better, but at the same time, he needs to come out.  The childcare plans have changed a bit and Amanda will now come and stay with the girls.  Scout left this afternoon for boarding just so she was taken care of. Hopefully everything is smooth and easy when the time comes.  Oh--went to my scheduled doctor appointment this afternoon and the office was closed...sooo now I just don't have one at all. odd.

Hoping for an easy labour....

Sold!

Who says you can't sell your house with 2 kids and a dog while 9 months pregnant?

So glad we made the decision to list before the baby was born! The whole crazy scheme actually worked.  Now we can just relax (sort of) for a while before we have to move.  Bittersweet.  It feels sad to see it sold.  As much as the new house will be amazing, we're sad to leave this one behind.

Selling the house wasn't that painful.  Of course we had to constantly clean the house and leave, but really we got to go out for some fun family meals, forget about cooking, and the girls and I did some great activities while we got out...pottery painting, parks, treats... It was a good excuse to get out and do stuff rather than sit around thinking I was going into labour all the time. We sent Scout to boarding for the busiest time, and then brought her back and just dealt with the fur for the remainder.  She spent a day with Uncle Mark and Tyler when there was an open house and a lot of showings.

So our possession date is June 24, and the lady who bought our house takes possession of this one on July 3.  So we have a decent amount of time to get out of here without having too much time with 2 houses.  We have set our moving date as June 29.

Rose's third birthday!

A fun, although rainy day! First thing in the morning Rose opened her birthday gifts.

After presies we headed off to Cora's for a birthday breakfast.  The girls both had waffles.

We had mentioned it was Rose's birthday and our server brought this special apple swan with a candle in it at the end of our meal.

After our meal we went home and played with the games and toys and then headed off to meet Rose's gymnastics friends at an indoor playground.  We got there later than the group but ended up staying for 3 hours.  Rose and Paige were both just having tons of fun with the friends, and then other random kids once the people we knew left.

In the evening the family came over for dinner.

3 Roses for Rose's third, and the cupcakes we made.

Happy Birthday Rosie!!!

Our baby is turning 3....

Tomorrow morning Rose will be 3.  No longer a toddler, she'll be into the realm of a pre-schooler.  We've learned a lot from Rose over the year.  One of the main things is that you can still be very capable at such a young age.  Rose is so independent for one so small.  She excels in her gymnastics class, can beat many a 3 year old in a running race, and can really feel the beat when she's dancing to music.  I, for one, learned what it would really be like to have a sibling.  This was the year where they were really able to play together, and I really see how they mutually benefit from one another.  Of course there are arguments and fights, and Rose isn't always kind, but for the most part they love having one another around.  We also learned the difference between a first born and second born child. Rose is more independent, but with that comes a lot of determination and therefore some pretty tantrumy times.

While she's still in the tantrum phase, we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.  She's starting to become more even tempered as she grows up.  Although she can be loud at home, she is becoming more and more shy with strangers, and even people she sees often.  Most other people have barely heard her speak.  She likes to hide behind my legs, or avert her eyes when people talk to her.  And they do talk to her a lot as she's so unbelievably cute.

Some of her favourite things lately have been painting, all other arts and crafts, dancing at home, dressing up, wearing mismatched clothing and shoes, brushing her teeth, puzzles, Candyland, and reading books.  Unfortunately not a fan of napping.  After that soother went away it was buh-bye naps. She still has an hour of quiet time every day, and actually stays quiet thanks to her Groclock which tells her when the hour is up.

I love how she tries so hard at everything she does, whether it is getting by dressed herself, or attempting other solo tasks, carefully colouring and trying to stay in the lines, trying to sing along to songs lyrics in the car, or dancing to her favourite songs.  I also love hearing her speak about the world around her.  I'll have to make it my goal to record some of her talking moments, as she is growing up too fast.

This year will bring a lot of changes with a baby brother due to be born at any time, a new house, and preschool in the fall.  I'm sure she'll just keep on laughing and smiling and rolling with whatever comes her way.  Happy third birthday Rose!

Things Rose says...

Paige had a haircut a couple of weeks ago.  After the haircut they offered to paint her nails.  Rose was interested so I asked if she could have hers done too.  She chose a shimmery green colour.  A few days later at home:

Paige: Rose you have green nail polish.

Rose: I didn't want green! I wanted black to show my friends!

The Turcsanyi's are on the move!

Ok, we're probably crazy but we bought a house.  We knew we'd move one day, and we really wanted an office and a guest room in the future, but hadn't talked about it too much with the baby on the way.  After thinking about it however, we realized we didn't want to move our kids around when they were in school and we figured moving before Grade 1 was the ideal time to do it.  We looked around a bit before making this decision, and once we decided that was a good idea we started to look around seriously in the neighbourhood we were interested in.  After waddling around some houses we fell in love with one. After thinking about it for a while we decided to make an offer.  After a whirlwind few weeks, we just completed a home inspection at the new place yesterday, got our house decluttered and purged, and are now listing our house for sale next week!! Insane! If this baby can hang in there till we sell our house that would be fantastic.  He has 3 weeks to just stay put at the bare minimum.  I'm hoping to sell our house within 2 weeks.  Typically it only takes that long on our street, so I'm hoping history repeats itself.  If that can happen then we're laughing!!

So...are we crazy? Certainly feels like it, although all this decluttering and purging right now while we have 1 less kid is probably the way to go.  Either way I'm useless with the big stuff...being heavily pregnant or strapped to a baby is not conducive for tackling a disaster basement.  I have tried to do my part and basically took on one job a day--front closet, cleaning fridge, my closet, bookshelf, etc.

Soo--this is the main reason why I would be freaked out if the baby came soon! The master plan is to sell the house and then just wait for him to come.  Hoping it works...let's see how this plays out.

Oh--here's the new house:

It is larger, has the office we needed, a 4th bedroom for guests, and the girls will still share in their bunk for now.   And in the summer there's a pool--this is a major draw for the girls and making them excited to move.  Well Paige anyway, I don't really think Rose knows what's going on.  We'll have to finish the basement, but it's not necessary in the short term.   As much as I love the house it is scary and kind of sad to leave our house and neighbourhood.  I am always resistant to change but I think we'll be ok.

36 weeks....

Shall we get this show on the road??

My typical torpedo stomach.  Sigh.  I often wonder what is worse...a more compact stomach where all your organs are squished, or this one.  I am fairly small though, so maybe this is the only way it all fits.

Life has been busy.  Very busy.  In a way I feel very unprepared for this baby to arrive now.  I assume he will come on time or late, as the other 2 were late, but if he is early I will be very very not mentally ready.

To make myself feel better I packed my hospital bag.  Only the snacks and juice boxes are missing.  It is not conventional to eat and drink in labour, but as I have hired a doula she says she highly recommends it as you burn 800 calories an hour in labour.  How else will you have any energy.  I fully fully agree.  Not sure if she makes you eat and drink on the down-low so you don't get in trouble, or do you just openly break the "rules"?  It will be interesting to see.  I have my final meeting with the doula on Monday night.  I'm looking forward to that as it will bring back some focus to the impending birth. I wonder when my mind will start to focus and I will start to feel that waiting around for something to happen feeling.  Definitely don't have that now which is why I would be so shocked.  Maybe a week before the due date I'll get that way...if I make it that long.  Everyone is convinced I'll go early, but then again people say that every time and it never happens.

We have the baby room all set and ready to go.  Baby clothes in the drawers and the new cloth diapers I'm trying out are all washed and ready.  Not much else to do except fix our existing monitor or buy a new one. I realize this time around though that things can wait.  ie. if we really needed to go run and grab a monitor after he is born it wouldn't be the end of the world.  I'm sure the girls would love to go to Toys r Us anyway.

So, hoping he is comfy in there for at least another 3 weeks and then we're good to go.  Trying to get a few things done in the next little while...

Do you think they woke up too early??

Paige on couch and Rose on chair.  Right after getting out of bed...
